Stihl Bar Data Page

Stihl is known for an exceptionally wide selection of original high-quality guide bars for their chainsaws. Coming in 3 mounts, 6 pitches, 5 gauges, 10 product lines and (at least) 16 lengths, the Stihl bar selection is wide enough to be a navigational challenge – there is no online catalogue.

This page lists useful information on Stihl guide bars in a tabular format. I have assembled the data myself from scattered sources, so the lists may not be totally complete or error-free. But I believe they are the best ones available.

This page lists original Stihl guide bars. For more options, please check my other posts for lists Stihl-compatible Oregon and Tsumura bars – these typically have much better availability.

Product lines

The table below shows which Stihl bars by product line. Most lines in 2021 are sub-branches of the Rollomatic line; the exceptions are the Duromatic and Carving lines.

Detailed tables

I have listed the available Stihl bar models and lengths in the tables below (all I found). The bars are sorted by chain pitch, then mount, then gauge.

I have included a link to the bar and compatible Stihl and Oregon chains at Amazon if possible. (Workshoppist.com is an Amazon Associate. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.) Online availability of original Stihl bars is sadly not that good; for a better selection, see my list of Oregon replacement bars for Stihl.

Compatible Stihl chains are also shortly indicated below. For a full list, please see my Stihl chain data page.

1/4″ Picco pitch

The 1/4″ Picco is the “lightest” Stihl chain pitch and is used in low-powered Stihl saws with an engine power 1½ hp or less, covering the battery saws MSA 120…200 (not MSA 220) and arborist gas saws under 30cc (MS 150,151). Also Stihl pole saws up to 1.9 hp or 35cc use the 1/4″ pitch (interestingly the power limit has been stretched there).

The 1/4″ Picco is also known as 1/4″ Extended or 1/4″ Low Profile (rare), and abbreviated 1/4P. The 1/4″ Picco bars come only in .043″ gauge ans Small 3005 mount and all take the 71 PM3 chain. The available bar models are listed in the table below.

1/4″ pitch

Stihl also offers bars in the 1/4″ (regular) pitch. The bars come in .050″ gauge, 3005 (Small) mount and are listed below. Note that the 1/4″ (regular) bars are not the default cutting equipment for any Stihl saw model.

3/8″ Picco pitch

The low-profile 3/8″ Picco pitch bars are used in Stihl saws from around 1.5 to 2.8hp or 25…45cc, covering entry-level gas models MS 170…201 and electric models MSE 141…210 (not MSE 250). The 3/8″ Picco is a low-profile, narrow-kerf version of the standard 3/8″ pitch, and alternatively called 3/8″ Extended or 3/8″ Low Profile, abbreviations 3/8P or 3/8LP.

3/8″ Picco chains and bars come in the Small 3005 mount and two gauges – .043″ (Picco Mini) and .050″ (Picco) – and are listed in the two tables below. The .043″ Picco Mini bars take 61 PMM3 and 61 PMMC3 chains and are recommended for saws under 2 hp; the .050″ gauge (Picco) bars have multiple chain options (63 PM/PM3/PS/PS3/PD3) with varying power ratings.

NB. Do not confuse the 3/8″ Picco with regular 3/8″ (plain) – the chains, bars and sprockets are incompatible.

.325″ pitch (3005 mount)

The intermediate .325″ chain pitch is used in gasoline-powered Stihl saws between 3…4 hp or 45…60cc. This narrow but popular saw class includes the MS 250, MS 251 Wood Boss, MS 271 Farm Boss and MS 291. Older models 025…036 used the .325″ too (with 036 putting out 4½ hp).

Stihl .325″ pitch bars come in 3 gauges: .050″, .058″ and .063″. NB. These bars come both in the Small 3005 and the Medium 3003 mount – select the one that matches your saw. The bar models are listed in the two tables below by mount. (See Oregon models for better online availability.)

.325″ pitch (3003 mount)

The larger Stihl saws with .325″ chain pitch have the Medium 3003 bar mount and take 3003 mount, .325″ pitch guide bars. These saws include the MS 271 Farm Boss and the MS 291. Online availability is not great here – see Oregon and Tsumura options.

3/8″ pitch

The 3/8″ (regular) chain pitch is used in practically all Stihl saws above 4 hp or 60cc. This means model numbers MS 311 and higher with new saws and 038 and higher with old saws.

3/8″ Stihl bars come both in the Medium 3003 and the Large 3002 mount and in two pitches: .050″ and .063″. The bar models are listed in the three tables below. (See Oregon bars, Tsumura bars)

NB. Do not confuse the 3/8″ with the incompatible 3/8″ Picco.
